Verrucae Shredding

What is a verruca?
Verrucae (warts) are caused by the papilloma virus (HPV) and are contagious. If the verruca does not hurt and does not appear to be spreading, it is best to leave it alone. The body’s own immunity should eventually destroy the virus without the need for treatment. However, discoloured lesions should be checked by your GP or HPC registered podiatrist.

My verruca hurts.
If the verruca is painful, spreading or growing larger, then treatment is indicated. The aim of all treatments is to create an auto immune response which stimulates the body's immune system to recognise the virus & destroy it. The length and type of treatment will vary according to the resistance of the verruca.

What can be done?
Lutterworth Chiropody is one of the few practices in the UK to offer the dry needling procedure, which is a highly effective treatment for stubborn Verrucae. It is a form of destructive therapy which is intended to damage the verruca and create a controlled inflammatory response around the area, stimulating the body's immune system to destroy it. The treatment has been around for 40 years and is used routinely with great success by practitioners internationally. This treatment is different from most other treatments (such as caustics, which can entail dozens of applications to be effective) as it only requires one, very occasionally two, applications making this an ideal treatment for busy people.

How does this method of treatment work?
By puncturing the tissue containing the virus multiple times, the virus particle is directly exposed to the tissue beneath allowing the body’s own immune system to recognise and destroy the virus. As this immune response is systemic, treatment of only one verruca is required even where there are many lesions as remission occurs in all Verrucae at the same time. The procedure is carried out under a local anaesthetic and only mild soreness the following day or two has been reported by a few patients, although the majority felt no discomfort at all following treatment.

Lutterworth Chiropody is pleased to offer this treatment for patients following an assessment
appointment and makes the commitment to undertake a second application free of-charge if
treatment is not effective with the first application.
